The Common Conditions Service (CCS), enabling community pharmacists to prescribe medicines for eight specific, minor ailments after a clinical consultation has been introduced. This service aims to improve local access to healthcare and reduce the burden on GP surgeries. An appointment can be booked here.
Conditions Covered
The service initially covers these eight conditions:
- Allergic Rhinitis: Inflammation of the nose (e.g., hay fever).
- Cold Sores: Small, fluid-filled blisters on the face or lips.
- Conjunctivitis: Eye inflammation caused by infection or allergies.
- Impetigo: A highly contagious skin infection with sores or blisters.
- Oral Thrush: Fungal infection in the mouth.
- Shingles: Painful viral skin rash.
- Uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Specifically bladder infections (cystitis) in women.
- Vulvovaginal Thrush: Common yeast infection in women.
Service Details for Patients
- Consultation: Patients must undergo a consultation with a registered pharmacist, who will follow specific HSE Clinical Protocols to determine the best course of treatment.
- Prescribing: If appropriate, the pharmacist can now issue a prescription for medicines previously only available via a GP.
- Cost: Patients eligible under community drug schemes (e.g., Medical Card holders) can have the cost of prescribed medicines covered.
